Hepatitis B-The One Not For Me

Hepatitis B is a virus that is passed through contact with body fluids. There is a higher chance of it being passed by blood, but it can also be passed by semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. HBV is the virus that leads to Hepatitis B. Only half of the infected victims are symptomatic, and very few die of liver failure. It is known as Acute Hepatitis B when victims have very few symptoms or none at all. Chronic Hepatitis B refers to patients that have severe, life-long, problems. Some of the symptoms that occur are vomiting, joint pain, jaundice, fatigue, and fever. If you have problems like this, then hopefully you would make a trip to the doctor.

After you have unprotected sex, share needles, or use someone else’s injection device, symptoms of Hepatitis B may not occur until 6 weeks to 6 months after. If the infection goes untreated, it can lead to serious health problems. This is why it is very important to go to a health clinic if you have any reason to suspect an STI. Pregnant women can cause damage to their babies if they carry Hepatitis B. Babies have a very high chance of developing chronic Hepatitis B which can lead to liver problems, serious health problems, and possibly death.

There isn’t a specific treatment to cure Hepatitis B, but there is therapy that will help stop the virus from becoming worse, and prevents liver disease from coming back, if a patient had already had it. There are two vaccines out that help prevent Hepatitis B; Recombivax HB and Engerix-B are used in both adolescents and adults. The only 100% way to protect yourself from Hepatitis B, is to be sexually abstinent. Hepatitis B isn’t the one for me, and hopefully isn’t the one for you either.
